About the Climb
The Butte Camp route offers climbers a higher degree of solitude than the more heavily used Monitor Ridge Route. Spring climbs on the Butte Camp route provide opportunities to learn about effective snow camping techniques, snowshoeing, and usage of personal equipment such as ice axes and crampons. In summer the route winds through flowering meadows and high alpine terrain as it moves toward treeline and the crater rim.
Skill Level
While it is not necessary to have previous mountaineering or winter camping experience for this trip, this is a strenuous climb on varied terrain. Therefore, it is advisable to be in peak physical condition so that you can focus on learning and enjoying the adventure. You will also be required to carry a portion of the group’s equipment which can weigh as much as 50 lbs. to base camp. Previous hiking and camping experience is recommended.
